Welcome to EMS

Welcome to the Cognition and Learning Enhanced Mainstream (EMS) class at Billingham South. We currently cater for children ages 6-11, in a learning environment filled with happy, enthusiastic, eager to learn children with excellent behaviour and high expectations.  We like to think that our curriculum is as special as our lovely pupils. The EMS curriculum is based upon a preparation for adulthood model. This means that as well as focusing on basic skills such as reading, writing and maths, we also offer a range of life skills. These life skills include access to specialist swimming lessons, cycling, specialist dance, ukulele, cookery, computing skills, and disability cricket, which is supported by Durham County Cricket Club. This approach, allows all of our children to experience success and become confident learners. All of this takes place in our centrally located, acoustically enhanced classroom. Our topics change every term, on a four yearly rota basis. All children have access to some inclusion in their mainstream year group, ranging from PE lessons to full afternoons and we are fully included in all aspects of mainstream school life. This graduated approach allows children to be challenged and achieve to the best of their ability whilst still accessing additional support.
