Year 1
Welcome to Year 1
In Year 1 with our autumn topic ‘Memory Box’, children’s knowledge and appreciation of local history, special memories, customs, traditions and growing up are studied. With our spring topic ‘Rio de Vida’ we move across the Atlantic ocean to Brazil. We compare Rio to Billingham, explore the Rio carnival and research a rainforest. Finally, in our ‘Sun, Sea, Sand’ topic, we learn about the history of holidays at the seaside and look at similarities and differences between our holidays then and now.
Daily phonic sessions support your child to become independent readers and regular reading at home helps your child to review and recall their learning. You don’t need to read a whole book every night but a few pages a night would be very beneficial.
During the school day, we always look out for children demonstrating our school values: Happiness, Responsibility, Courage, Resilience and Quality. We always try to be the best we can be in Year 1 and are not afraid to give things a try, no matter how hard they may seem!
