Welcome to Reception

Reception is a very busy and fun place to be, it marks the final year of their Early Years journey.   During the academic year the children will be developing their skills, confidence and independence.  Personal, Social and Emotional development is one of the Prime areas of development in the Early Years Curriculum.  They will continue to learn how to self-regulate, manage-self and to build positive relationships.  This is encouraged through routines, turn taking in conversation, listening to each other and modelling positive behaviour.  Children who are demonstrating the school values of:  Happiness, Responsibility, Courage, Resilience and Quality are praised and encouraged.

Reading and sharing stories are a huge part of the school day, exploring the characters, the setting and the problem of the story.  We promote a love of stories through drama.  The children are taught new poems throughout the week and they learn actions alongside each poem.  Sharing different genres of non-fiction/fiction and poetry books is vital at this stage of their learning

Daily phonics sessions support children to hear the initial sounds of words, orally blend and then read CVC words independently.

The first reading books that are sent home will be wordless, at this stage we want to promote oral storytelling.  When your child begins to blend letter sounds together in order to read words, their reading books will include words.
